Designer: Pip Wheatcroft After a forced career change, I decided I’d do some gardening until something else came up and enlisted as a volunteer at Calke Abbey. It gradually dawned on me that this was my new direction. With the help and support of the staff at Calke, I successfully completed the RHS Advanced Certificate in Horticulture at Brooksby College, and was employed to renovate and maintain the holiday cottage gardens on the Calke Estate. A spell at Rosliston Forestry Centre followed, teaching Environmental Education and I continued to further my garden design education. Work as a freelance gardener and designer followed and I was employed by Cameron Forest and Garden on many successful projects. I’d completed more practical exams on Herbicide Application and Chainsaw qualification. Recently I’ve been managing and maintaining a large garden in Warwickshire. Developing a successful garden design business is many peoples’ dream and I am continually reminded of this especially on hot July afternoons.
However, it’s not all ride on lawn mowers and colouring in. A career in Horticulture is a lot more appealing on a sunny afternoon in June rather than a wet Wednesday in November. As was pointed out to me when I was dressed as an elf at Rosliston………….... Many are called, but few are chosen. |
